Sasha DRUTSKOY (1963)
Born in London in 1963 to a Russian father and an English mother.
He studied drawing and painting in Brussels between 1985 and 1989 at the studio of the painter Viorica Scodrea, who was a student of André Lhote in Paris.
His painting, resolutely of today, are heir and continuation of a pictorial tradition.
Imbued with surrealism (Magritte) and romanticism (Caspar Friedrich), they are located outside time in a fantasised dimension.
They lead the viewer into inner worlds beyond appearances, while keeping an anchor in the physical reality of our shared experience. At the center of the painter’s concerns is the relation of humans to both the natural order and the world they construct, to the real and the imaginary, the distressing and the reassuring.
His manner is a fusion of the ancient and the contemporary and is designed to achieve an expression most in adequacy with the subject he treats.
The questions that his works raise are those of our relationship to the world, of the relationship between the natural order and the universe of the unconscious. Through the staging of our questions, our fantasies and our daydreams his painting seeks a balance at the threshold of the real and the imaginary.
Sasha lives and works in Brussels.
He regularly exhibits his work in galleries, institutions and fairs, both in Belgium and abroad.
