Johan VAN MULLEM

Johan Van Mullem (Belgian painter born in 1959) was persistent in his youth in the search for wrinkled, crumpled faces, looking for the beauty that he recognised in a life engraved on the faces and hands.

Since then, the face has remained the major subject of his work, but over time he has reversed the imprint of the face on his own face, while these subjects seem to become younger, disappearing or being born in a halo of light in an old-fashioned sfumato, offering the eye an escape to the world of emotion, because Johan van Mullem's work is an invitation to introspection, to a journey whose omnipresent emotional charge cannot leave one indifferent, as the depth is often dizzying.

The superimposition and erasure of the many smooth layers of diluted inks further accentuates this feeling of unspeakable presence on the canvas. This gives the work great depth. Movement and light are two very important factors for the artist.
The faces float in an intermediate state between appearance and disappearance.

The self-taught mastery of the specific and unique technicality of his work, as it is only executed with intaglio ink (an extension of his experience as an engraver) gives his work an additional exceptional character.

Johan Van Mullem is a complete artist, a draughtsman, a painter and a sculptor, but also a poet and a musician. His work is multiple, diversified but absolutely coherent, offering links and bridges to all our senses, which are awakened by this work that projects us as much into the past as into the present.

Johan's work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in many important collections.
